October 15, 2015, Halifax, N.S. – The Halifax Farmers’ Market, now known as the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market, will celebrate 265 years of operation this weekend, making it the oldest, continuously operating farmers’ market in North America.

The Halifax Farmers’ Market was established by royal decree in 1750, just one year after the establishment of Halifax itself. To mark this significant milestone, the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market will hold anniversary celebrations during the annual Harvest Festival which takes place October 17 and 18, 2015.

Anniversary activities at the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market will be taking place throughout the weekend. There will be bouncy castles and a petting zoo for younger children as well as live entertainment, and of course, fresh local flavours, unique hand-crafted gifts, and delicious prepared food. A cake cutting ceremony will take place Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.

“Much has changed over the years but the core elements have remained consistent – dedicated vendors, fresh produce, one-of-a-kind hand-crafted goods, and wonderful customers,” said Julie Chaisson, Executive Director of the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market. “This weekend, we are proud to be celebrating our 265th anniversary with our vendors and our customers.”

As part of the 265th anniversary celebrations, the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market will be accepting cash donations on behalf of the Dartmouth North Community Food Centre, an organization in its first year of operation. For each donation, customers will receive a small gift of fresh produce generously provided by Seaport Market vendors while supplies last.
